Complementing our LLI “money” study groups, we will have a professional guide from About Tours give us an inside look at money: how it is made and lost and where it comes from. A visit to the Chicago Board of Trade, located in a landmark Art Deco building in the heart of the Loop will be our first stop. Have you ever wondered what the hand signals mean, or how the traders keep track of all the action in the “pits?” We will get these answers and much more during our visit.

We’ll have lunch amidst the colored jackets of traders in the Cellars Market, a cafeteria in the Board of Trade. After lunch we will visit the Federal Reserve Bank for a special program to learn about the money supply, the design of the new U.S. currency, and what causes the prime rate to jump around. During our tour we will hear about the rich and famous residents of Chicago and how money makes the city go round.

In the afternoon we will continue to follow the money trail, visiting the Chicago History Museum to view the special exhibit “Chic Chicago.” We will have the rare opportunity to see over 50 of the greatest couture treasures from the museum’s collection. The exhibition features Gilded Age gowns by Worth and Pingat to modern masterpieces by Chanel and Schiaparelli. The garments span from 1878-1996.

For those whose interests are not gowns, the museum has its permanent exhibits – “Chicago: Cross Roads of America” and “Sensing Chicago.” “Catholic Chicago” is another special exhibit that will be on display.

Depart from the Normal Road entrance of the Holmes Student Center at 7:30 a.m., Monday, November 3, 2008, and return approximately 6:30 p.m. Fee includes professional guide, lunch, and transportation.
