Taste of Northern Italy and The Italian Riviera
October 13 to 21, 2012
Discover preserved medieval towns, rustic vineyard living, exquisite restaurants and art collections, and the picturesque scenery of lakes surrounded by snow-capped mountains, on this adventure to Northern Italy. We'll begin our touring in the Emilia-Romagna capital city of Bologna, with its stunning terracotta brick houses, ancient palazzo, and impressive churches. Then, a visit to Parma will provide a rich culinary experience as we sample locally produced cheese, ham, prosciutto, and some of the country's fine wines. We'll also tour Castello di Torrechiara, one of the best preserved 15th century fortifications in northern Italy.
Traveling to the Italian Riviera, we'll reach the charming villages of the Cinque Terre, a protected stretch of rocky coastline accessible only by train or sea. Time seems to stand still in these primeval hamlets where the locals remain strongly rooted in their customs and traditions. We'll travel by train and boat along the coastline to see these dramatically situated villages that cling to the very edge of cliffs.
A leisurely day on tour will introduce us to beautiful Lake Como, set in a tranquil landscape of mountains and rugged hillsides. Then we'll hop on a ferry to reach the delightful resort of Bellagio, considered by many to be the most beautiful town in all of Italy. We'll also spend time in Turin, known for the creativity of its chocolatiers and for the quality of chocolate itself, and for the Chapel of the Holy Shroud which enshrines the precious but much-contested Shroud of Turin.
Additional touring includes Portofino, the legendary Borromean Island of Isola Bella at the center of Lake Maggiore, and Stresa, an idyllic Lake District resort. Northern Italy is a delightful blend of epicurean treats, intriguing art and culture, medieval history, exquisite resorts, and breathtaking views and landscapes. Please your palate and satisfy your desire for culture and beauty on this unique discovery of northern Italy and the Italian Riviera.
