Join esteemed historian Joseph Reidy, M.A. '74, Ph.D. '82, as he shares some of the lessons from his decades of research, and also how his education from NIU prepared him for his academic career. Dr. Reidy's talk, "The Persistent Illusions of Civil War Emancipation," will be illuminating for anyone interested in American history. 


reidy-bookDr. Reidy was recently awarded the 2020 Bancroft Prize in American History and Diplomacy by the Columbia University Libraries for his book, “Illusions of Emancipation: The Pursuit of Freedom and Equality in the Twilight of Slavery.” He spent over 30 years as a history professor at Howard University before retiring in 2017.
