NIU’s Master of Public Administration (MPA) program once again received high marks in the latest U.S. News & World Report annual rankings of graduate schools.

mpa-3-story-smallThe MPA program ranked fourth in the nation in the specialty field of local government management and 20th in the field of public finance and budgeting. In addition, the program ranked 33rd in public management and leadership and an overall ranking of 58th in the nation out of more than 300 university programs.

“We are really pleased to have sustained our high national rankings,” said Kurt Thurmaier, Presidential Engagement Professor and chair of NIU’s Department of Public Administration. “Our top rankings are a testament to the overall strength of our program.”

NIU’s MPA program is the oldest in the state and its MPA internship program is recognized internationally for its excellence. Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA), the program stresses both applied problem-solving and ethical administrative practices while teaching skills that apply to a variety of work environments.

“We invite anyone who is in local government that has been tapped for a leadership position to learn more about our MPA program,” Thurmaier said. “This high ranking is evidence that NIU is a smart investment in your future.”

Students have the option to earn their degree entirely online or traditionally (either part-time or full-time) while choosing from six different areas of specialization: Strategic Public Management and Leadership, Local Government Management, Fiscal Administration, Non-profit Management, Comparative Public Service and Public Service Law and Management.

“We continue to have award winning alumni,” Thurmaier said. “Our grads are not just working in local government, they are leaders in their governments and their communities.” Go to NIU’s MPA program to learn more or to apply.
