Meet a Huskie: Emily McKee and Courtney Gallaher -- Food Access and Sustainability in Troubled Times

Join NIU professors Emily McKee, Ph.D, and Courtney Gallaher, Ph.D, as they discuss challenges and opportunities in locally oriented food systems in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Professor McKee will draw on her work with small-scale and diversified farmers in northern Illinois, food buyers in the Rockford area, and nonprofit efforts to address food equity. Professor Gallaher will discuss her work on food security and sustainability in relation to community and backyard gardens and food pantries.

Speaker information:

  • Emily McKee specializes in environmental and Middle East anthropology, with a particular focus on political ecology. She is jointly appointed at NIU with the Anthropology Department and the Institute for the Environment, Sustainability and Energy.
  • Courtney Gallaher is a human-environment geographer who specializes in environmental management and sustainable food and agricultural systems. She is jointly appointed at NIU with the Center for the Study of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies.
