Meet a Huskie: NIU ROTC Cadets and Cadre

Join the NIU cadets and cadre from the NIU ROTC program as they discuss the program on Thursday, Dec. 10, from 5-6 p.m. On a virtual Zoom call, the student cadets will share their experiences, as well as the part that the ROTC plays in the mascot program working with Mission. Keith F. Buchanan, Scholarship and Enrollment Officer, will present during the event.

The NIU ROTC Huskie Battalion was established by Department of the Army General Order number 81 on Dec. 17, 1968. NIU granted the ROTC program its current academic status as the Department of Military Science in 1969, over 400 lieutenants have been commissioned in the past 40 years.

Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) is one of the best leadership courses in the country and can be a part of your college curriculum. Being a student at Northern Illinois University and learning to become a leader will make a student's college experience even richer and prepare then for the future.

The Army ROTC at NIU is designed to give students experience in organizing, motivating and leading othersall while completing a bachelor’s degree of your choice.

Completing the program leads to a commission in the U.S. Army. However, students can enroll in the Army ROTC for the first two years (basic course) without a military service obligation. If a students complete the advanced course, they are commissioned to serve in the Active Army, Army National Guard or the U.S. Army Reserves.
