A Message From the Council
|
|
Campus was abuzz with activity at the end of 2023!
Homecoming has continued to evolve, creating more spaces to gather through tailgating, socials, receptions and bringing back more Black alumni to reconnect with their alma mater. Kudos to the staff and alumni members of the Center for Black Studies Homecoming Committee, whose efforts have gone a long way to make this weekend a success.
We also celebrated NIU’s December graduates with the Center for Black Studies and are proud to see another successful class become alumni. We've certainly been busy these past few months, so please check out this photo album from all of our activities.

We once again had a successful fundraising campaign for the Fanny Ruth Patterson Scholarship, which was made possible by alumni like you. We exceeded our $23,000 goal and are looking forward to awarding the scholarship to more deserving students this month. A big THANK YOU to all who contributed this year and in the past!
Even though 2024 just started, there is plenty to do! We are in the midst of Black Heritage Month and are excited to share the upcoming events below, feature our Huskies, and are looking forward to launching a networking social in Chicago this June. We also have plans to take the annual alumni picnic to the next level, so be on the lookout for more details in our next newsletter!

The NIU basketball teams, led by head coaches Rashon Burno and Lisa Carlsen, will come together at the NIU Convocation Center for the annual “Cram the Convo” men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 24.
Coach Burno and the Huskies look to continue a February resurgence while the NIU women’s team is building momentum for the stretch run of the season. Both teams have their sights set on a trip to Cleveland for the 2024 MAC Championships which will make for an exciting day of basketball!
Come out in support of both teams beginning at 1 p.m. with the women’s game versus Bowling Green, followed by the NIU men's team taking on Ohio at 3:30 p.m. Connect at the Alumni Day event in the South Lobby of the NIU Convocation Center between the games from 2-4 p.m. $5 tickets are available and are good for both games.
